Chapter 12
The Reveal

Kael and Elara entered the large science laboratory of The Aegis hand in hand. The room’s astounding technology was tastefully concealed behind soft linear curves and warm, mild lighting. Though purely functional, the space had been transformed into something theatrical — as if they were about to witness a grand ballet.
The Core sat at the far wall, framed by two tall pillars. Small apertures in the pillars were ready to douse the cube with suppressing mist if needed. Eight metres in front of it, a viewing platform had been built for Kael and his Queen.
A protective transparent screen separated them from the cube. A lavish couch with side tables — stocked with wine and delicacies — waited at the centre of the platform. Behind them, a trio of musicians played Kael’s favourite orchestral compositions.
The entire arrangement had been prepared over the past few days, after Helix confirmed they could safely open the Core. Kael had ordered the delay. This moment deserved to be an occasion — something fitting to honour the effort of its acquisition.
Elara settled beside him. Kael took her hand and asked gently if she was comfortable and ready. “Helix — explain what we are about to see.
” Helix’s calm voice filled the chamber. The cube had been thoroughly analysed. Its internal temperature was far colder than the exterior.
Sophisticated systems maintained perfect conditions inside while the outer framework provided extreme protection. Helix’s earlier assessment still held: the configuration suggested a repository for organic material. Kael had suspected as much.
His probes and research had pointed to something extraordinary — something that could change his future. He simply hadn’t known how. Now, after all the failed negotiations and the desperate battle, the truth was moments away.
“When you are ready, Kael. ” Kael simply said, “Begin the opening sequence. ” Small mechanical arms extended from the pillars and inserted themselves into precise points on the cube.
The front face began to separate — split perfectly along a vertical centre line. It opened slowly, revealing two large wedges that sloped away at the top. Lights activated inside the cavity.
Elara’s hand tightened on Kael’s. He turned to her and saw the astonishment on her face. When he looked back, he shared it.
The front sections continued opening. Inside, reclining within a cryo chamber, was a statuesque female form. Naked.
Perfectly preserved. Attended by the quiet technology around her. She looked like a masterpiece of ancient marble sculpture.
When the doors were fully open, they saw her face. It was Lira. Framed this time by loose, thick falling hair rather than her usual tightly curated style.
Kael was profoundly moved. Lira had placed herself in cryo-stasis. She had chosen this sleep — this protected existence — explaining the extraordinary investment in the Core.
He turned to Elara, realising the implications. They were now in the company of two human sovereigns. Kael looked back at the woman in the chamber.
The months ahead would be spent trying to understand why Lira had chosen this path. But for now, the only question that mattered was when to wake her.
