Chapter 09

The Door

The Door

Kael stared at the enormous door. Even if he had wanted to blast it down, he had nothing left that could do meaningful damage. The tethered drone continued firing in short, controlled bursts, keeping the remaining defenders suppressed farther back in the corridor.

He had broken their initial formation, but he could hear them regrouping. It would not hold for long. He swept his flashlight across the door’s surface.

The beam caught on fine, almost invisible lines in the stone — too regular to be natural. He ran his gloved fingers along them, feeling for any seam or mechanism. Nothing.

The door was seamless from this side. “Helix. Full scan.

” The AI began feeding him metallurgical data and possible locking systems. Kael tried to focus, but the stream of information blurred. His mind kept returning to Lira.

To the way she had stood in the holo-frame during their last real conversation, perfectly still, letting his arguments die in the air between them. A pulse blast slammed into his back. The impact drove him forward.

He dropped the flashlight. It shattered on the stone floor, scattering fractured beams of light across the corridor. His suit had absorbed most of the energy, but the force knocked the air from his lungs.

For several seconds he lay prone, staring at the broken pieces of the light. Lira’s remembered words returned with perfect clarity. “A sovereign who never stops moving will never truly build anything that lasts.

Legacy requires stillness. ” Defying the pain in his back and wrist, Kael crawled forward. Near the shattered flashlight he noticed two faint, almost invisible smudges on the floor — pressure marks, visible only from this low angle.

Without thinking, he placed his knees on them and lowered his head and shoulders into a deep genuflection, forehead nearly touching the stone. From this position he saw it clearly: a narrow depression hidden in the shadow beneath the door’s lower edge. A hidden latch that could only be reached by someone willing to kneel.

He slid his fingers beneath it and lifted. The massive door began to open with a deep, resonant groan that vibrated through the floor and up into his bones.
